HOWICKS's Hiretown has stood the test of time, not only surviving
for 40 years but expanding steadily to meet the growing demand
from tradepeople and do-it-your-selfers.
Started in 1964 by local resident, Bruce Byers, in Bradbury
Rd where he hired out machinery and equipment from the family's
farm buildings, the company grew rapidly. |
Four years later Bruse leased new premises at 118 Vincent
St from Ernie Stanley who had previously run a joinery business
from the site.
"I purchased the property from Stanley in 1973 but by 1979 we were
bursting at the seams so we expanded by doubling the size and
adding another floor which was finished in 1980," Bruce says.
Demand for hire tools and other equipment continued and six years later
Bruce's son Christopher joined his dad in the firm where they are assisted
by serviceman and mechanic David Hayman.
"We hire all types of machinery for the trades and handymen and party
catering equipment such as crockery, glasses, trestle tables, urns and
more," Bruce says. "We used to print the full list but it is now so
extensive it is no longer practical to do so. However, there isn't much
we don't hire out."
Hiretown also sells and services all types of machinery such as chainsaws
and nailguns and operates a six-day business - Monday-Saturday, 7:30am-5:30pm.
"New Zealanders have always had a reputation for being do-it-youselfers and
this hasn't changed much over the years," Bruce says. "We like to think that
at Hiretown we can provide the right equipment for every job at prices that
go easy on the pocket."
